Candidates Respond to SA “Constitutional Crisis”
This in no way will become an SA blog; there are certainly other avenues for that. It just so happens that the Student Association is providing an on-going drama that is quite interesting.
While the Senate decides whether or not to defy the judicial branch of government, a couple of presidential candidates have responded.
Some of the candidates are very good at getting their message out, sending almost constant press releases to let us know what they are up to. They’ve already snatched up the Student Court debacle and have made it a campaign issue.
Sophomore Nick D’Addari, currently a senator seeking the presidency, said in a statement yesterday:
“For the Student Court to overturn a popular decision crafted by the elected representatives and mandated by an election of the student population is not only neglectful, but detrimental to the SA’s responsibility to make students’ lives better on this campus. This is a perfect example of the BS and politics that prevents the SA from working on real student issues. This is college, not government, and there is no room for this political role-playing when we must be working for the students!”
D’Addario, who is currently a senator, is framing this as a perfect example of corrupt student government that needs to be changed. He’s not the only one.
Sophomore Robert Ryan Sangster, who lost his bid for a university at-large seat last year, sent a press release saying that he and his running mate, Josh Lasky, “remain united,” even though the constitution that the Student Court supports does not allow for a vice presidential candidate.
“The Student Court decision to nullify the fall 2005 Special Election will have no effect on our plan to move forward together…. We will stay focused on the issues and will not become embroiled in a frivolous debate about the status of internal SA documents. We pledge to focus on the issues which actually impact students – issues more important than which constitution is in effect. We refuse to waste our time attempting to oust those who disagree with us; the Sangster-Lasky team will always work with those who share our vision.”
These are just two of what is probably many presidential candidates with opinions on the matter. As this election gets closer, you can count on the DC and this blog to do its best to explain what is going on.
