4X4 Task Force Continues Discussions

Just a quick update/status report on the 4-by-4 proposal:

The task force is currently discussing administrative impacts of switching to a four credit per four class system. “I expect that in about two weeks, we shall begin talking about resources connected to a 4×4 change,” said Vice President of Academic Affairs Donald Lehman in an e-mail yesterday.

Lehman said he has been visiting schools with the system already in place to “discuss with their respective faculties what the committee has been discussing and learning.”

The four-by-four structure is used at several of GW’s peer universities, including Boston University and Northeastern University, as well as Harvard, Princeton and Yale Universities. As opposed to the current system of the average, recommended workload of five classes for three credits each, students would take four classes worth four credits.

In the coming weeks, as the decision becomes final, we will provide an in depth analysis listing pros and cons of the system. Stay tuned…
