A member of the GW Softball team confirmed for the Daily Colonial Tuesday that head coach JoAnne Ferguson has resigned. Ferguson reportedly will take the head coaching position at Division III Pomona which is located in California.
The player, who wishes to remain unidentified, said that Ferguson told the squad at a team meeting Monday.
“It happened really suddenly, we were all really confused.”
The players then congregated as group Tuesday night in the study lounge of New Hall to discuss their coach’s resignation.
“Were disappointed, we have already had two coaches but we see the good coming. We know we are going to get stronger.”
Ferguson had just completed her second season as coach Sunday when GW lost both ends of a doubleheader to Fordham. The Colonials finished the year with a 24-28 record but were just 3-15 in A-10 play. In Ferguson’s first season GW finished with a 10-34 record.
Ferguson was hired to replace Shaunte’ Fremin who resigned in the midst of controversy over her coaching tactics. With Fremin under investigation and many of the team’s players hurt the university canceled the 2004 softball season after just seven games.
The program which began play in 2003 at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex will have its fourth different head coach when it steps onto the field for its fifth season next spring. GW has yet to qualify for the A-10 tournament and has just 38 wins in 103 games.
