SMPA search ends with new director, faculty member

The University announced today that Lee W. Huebner will become the new director of the School of Media and Public Affairs, ending a months-long search and a years long vacancy.

President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg said that appointment was “worth waiting for.”

“In Lee Huebner, we gain a director with a wealth of talent and experience in print journalism, political research, and higher education,” said Trachtenberg in a statement. “He represents the perfect blend of theory and practice that will set our students on the right course for their careers.”

Huebner currently serves as professor of communication studies and journalism at Northwestern University, whose School of Communications and Medill School of Journalism are well-known and respected. He has also served as publisher and CEO of the International Herald Tribune and was the deputy director of the White House writing and research staff during the Nixon Administration.

Huebner was one of four finalists that included broadcaster Bill Press, the Washington Post’s Charles Lane, and CNN’s Frank Sesno.
