Joan Regnell dies at 79
Joan Regnell, an associate professor of speech and hearing and director of the Speech and Hearing Center at GW, died Friday of acute renal failure at Virginia Hospital Center. She was 79.
Regnell taught an undergraduate class in speech and diction and specialized in voice disorders. She was awarded GW’s Excellence in Teaching award in 1991 and won the award for best graduate adviser this year.
Regnell began working at GW after earning both an undergraduate (1957) and graduate (1960) degree in speech and hearing from the University.
According to the Washington Post, “Regnell retired in 2003, then was dismayed to learn that meant she could teach only one class a semester. She spent all her time at the school and clinic nonetheless.”
