GW safety task force created in wake of Virginia Tech

From Metro Editor Brittany Grimm:

President Knapp announced Friday the creation of a task force charged with reviewing the lessons of the Virginia Tech tragedy. Its aim is to re-examine GW’s current policies in light of the findings by, among others, a Virginia state review panel and VT’s own internal investigation. The VT report included 200 general recommendations that will be scrutinized for relevance to GW.

The task force will comprised of two committees, the Committee on Safety and Security and the Committee on Mental Health and Violence Prevention.

Knapp stressed that at this time, no assumptions can be made about wide-spread changes.

“It’s an opportunity to take another look,” he said, “but it’s not driven by any particular concerns that I have… I’m not making any presumption at all that anything needs to be changed or improved.”

The report will cover logistics and procedures at all GW campuses and graduate centers, and is scheduled for presentation to Knapp on Nov. 9, 2007.
