Do you know someone with a special talent or story that needs to be heard?

The Daily Colonial is collecting nominations for a new feature: Student of the Week. We’ll interview a different student every week to highlight his/her story and share it with the rest of the university. The only requirement is that the person is a current, full-time student at GW. Whether they shine in the classroom, as House Proctor, as president of an organization, or even if he/she is just an amazing friend, we want to know about them! Send all submissions to daily@gwu.edu .

Two GW sports teams underwent coaching changes this summer, adding some excitement and unpredictability to the upcoming season.

Golf - GW golf coach Scott Allen has decided to leave the position that he has held for 14 years. Allen is the coach with the most wins in the 80 years of the GW golf program, with 1,270 wins. A 1993 graduate of GW and a former captain of the golf team, Allen is the most successful golf coach in the school’s history. In 2006, the team made its first NCAA tournament. Allen was also GW’s Recruiting Coordinator and a golf instructor in the school’s Exercise Science Program. He has accepted a job at the University of Pennsylvania as the school’s Director of Golf. Allen will serve as the Quakers’ men’s team coach and will also oversee the women’s program. There is not yet a replacement for Allen at GW.

Women’s Basketball - Allen is the second head coach with over 10 years experience at GW to depart for bigger programs. In June, women’s basketball coach Joe McKeown left GW and the Atlantic 10 to head up the women’s program at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. In his 19th season in Foggy Bottom, Coach McKeown amassed 441 wins. He led the women to 15 NCAA tournament berths including three Sweet Sixteen appearances and one Elite Eight appearance in addition to being one of the most beloved coaches the school has known. He is the winningest coach in school and conference history. Northwestern is the third school where McKeown will have a head coaching position. He spent three seasons at New Mexico State before arriving at GW in 1989. Mike Bozeman will take over as head coach for the Lady Colonials. Bozeman, a Washington, D.C. native in his fourth year at GW, was an assistant coach for the team last season. He is the eighth coach in the 34-year history of the GW women’s basketball program.
